I had little interest in this when it was being produced by the Dabel Brothers, but was excited when I heard DE was taking it over. The prose novels and collections laid out a great superhero universe, that's just begging to be exploited as a comic book (Marvel's Epic Comics line tried it in the 90s with underwhelming results). Tim Truman did a whole series of covers for the paperbacks, why not get him involved in character design and models, covers if not actual interior art. And get a strong writer like Kurt Busiek, or maybe one of the original prose authors (yes, I realize George R.R. Martin is way too busy). Please?

This series seems the most distant from ERBs vision of mars, which while it did have violence and naked women it was not about those thigns, and always had dignity . . .

This series is playing out like a cheap slasher movie rather than a romantic vision of mars.

I hope the story improves in the final three issues, but so far it is very "Meh" compared to the other miniseries in the warlord of mars series

So, I've recently began seriously reading Vampirella from Dynamite Entertainment, before I would just pick an issue up here and there but I've gone back and completed all 16 issues and I'm really enjoying them quite a bit (currently reading issue 9). I'm absolutely loving the art early on, I flipped through issue #16 and I see that there is a different artist working on some of the newer issues and his stuff is pretty damn fantastic too and I'd say that Dynamite has done a great job with the art in this book.

I feel the same about the story. It's been damn good, and I'm one of the people who support the costume change (I know it regulates eventually) and I'm really loving the way the writer is handling this character, it's really entertaining. Now I know what people are going to say, "if you like this than you need to pick up ____ to read her earlier stories!"....yeah, sorry but I'm far from interested. I'm loving what DYNAMITE is doing with this character and the same goes for other characters such as Green Hornet, The Phantom, and others and I have ZERO interest in reading older works of these characters. I'm totally invested in what DE is doing with them and I'm going to be sticking with their books for the long haul, Vampirella is no exception.

Thanks Dynamite!

Yet another strong issue in this series. I am still having a little trouble adjusting to the art style, but the writing has been impressively strong. This seems (at least on the surface) to be a single-issue story probing into the Barnabas' conflicted nature--being both a good man and a horrible monster at the same time. This is not some silly comedy like the Johnny Depp movie seems to be (at least based on the promos). This is a gloom-ridden, somber story of survival (both that of Barnabas and the Collins family).

And I don't want to be too critical of the art because I understand that they are working under restrictions: by its very nature and atmosphere, the art needs to be filled with (ahem! cough, cough) dark shadows. And, because it is based on the TV series, established characters should bear some resemblance to their TV counterparts. Actually, with those requirements, the art has been quite good. It just isn't quite to my taste. But the writing is so good that I will happily ignore any art shortcomings that I perceive.

A new story arc is beginning. If you haven't been reading this book, start with this issue.

So, I was in my local comic book store today and they had signs up everywhere for a 75% off all back issue bins that will be happening on Memorial Day weekend. I asked a few questions to the owner about the specifics and he basically went into a story about how he can remember a day when he would sell hundreds of dollars worth of back issues every day and how he was always buying up collections and bulk runs to fill his back issue bins with, but these days he doesn't bother because he can go days without selling even one comic out of his bins. Basically he says if it isn't a book that's within 6-8 months old than he has no movement on the stuff and it forces him to often do 50%-75% off anything in the bins during certain times of the year, and even at that he says not much will move. It's kind of sad that new arrivals and TPB's are keeping him alive and the market for classic stuff in single issue has all but died, it seems like comic book "collectors" have went away and the market is filled with comic book "casuals".

I remember back in the early to mid 90's I was at a couple different local comic book stores multiple times a week and people were always raiding the back issue bins, I was one of them. One store would do a 25%-50% off sale around the Summer to kick off the season and the store was littered with people going through the back issue bins trying to find stuff to put together a set or a run of something, many of which were older people in their 40's who were serious collectors and who kept checklists with them to ensure they got everything they needed. I miss those days. I'm sure older comics do well in certain areas more so than others, but it just seems as though the overall market for being a back issue collector has died and the market is more focused on collections and whatever the brand new issue is. Personally, I'll always remember the fun I had diving into the back issue bins, and it's something I still do today, but whenever I'm doing it I'm usually the only one and I can't help to feel a little depressed as I write this.

So this time around, I'm gonna tell you what I think as I read it. I think I may have used this gimmick before. Not sure. But hell, there are only six issues or so left, so who cares if I cannibalize a gimmick or two?

We open with a shot of Vas, who has magically grown his fingers back. I guess he goes to the same doctor as Frenchy, who somehow regenerated an entire arm on the cover of the last issue. See, that's the problem with us fanboys. We remember things. Kinda makes you wonder why the writers and artists don't. Anyway, for reasons best known to Garth, Butcher is being kept off-panel. Like maybe we don't know it's Butcher. He's discussing depleted Uranium. We've seen this very discussion before, back in the "We Gotta Go Now" arc. At least I'm not the only one reusing gimmicks.

Anyway, Vas whines something about "not letting Butcher do something or other", and then we see a guy hanging from a chain. I'm sure there's a frightfully interesting backstory here. I'm also sure we'll never get to read it, because if it doesn't involve dog sex, decapitations, or silly accents, Ennis can't be arsed to actually include it in the book. Butcher monologs some more, and shoots poor Vas with a bazooka. A small side note here, but I do have to wonder when Ennis decided that all anyone wants to read about in comics is assholes behaving in assholish ways. Who are we rooting for here? Or is the concept of actually giving a shit about characters just way too effete for this title?

A couple of pages pass with Hughie wandering around aimlessly, while a huge wall of text blathers on and on in the form of a news broadcast. All of this could have been handled with one line of text: "One year later..." There's also one of those odd moments when Ennis acknowledges the idiocy of his own plot, when the news cast points out that Vought's entire plan was to get supes in the military, yet Vought couldn't create a decent Supe. But this being Garth Ennis, he couldn't even do that without contradicting himself. He says that the results of V are "totally unpredictable", but that's complete bullshit. Every single member of the Boys who was given V had exactly the same results.

I'm not even sure how to recap this next part. Frenchy has apparently completely lost his mind, and now wanders around dressed as Napoleon. MM is telling us about how he "needs to solve his family problems", but what the hell has he been doing for the past year if not dealing with the fact that his daughter is doing porn? And there's something about the Female catching Hughie masturbating, but I really don't give a damn. The whole segment is just weird. The newscast said that the incident at the White House occurred "last year", but everything else in the book makes it sound like it all happened yesterday. WTF?

So, Mother's Milk calls the ball, and the Boys are no more. Yay.

We switch over to Vought Guy and Gal, who are discussing their futures. This is precisely as fun as reading a transcript of the Enron trial. The only good part is that they get kinda cuddly towards the end of the scene. Cuddly for them, anyway.

Back with The Boys: Butcher returns. He offers them three months off. Somehow, that's better than "the rest of our lives off", so they take him up on it. Butcher makes Hughie his second in command. This pisses the rest of The Boys off. And yet, instead of just doing the logical thing and just disbanding, like they were set to do no more than 60 seconds before, they wander around whining about how unfair it all is. It's hard to even make jokes about any of this. It's like the issue was written by a random sentence generator.

We finish up with the only good part of the book: (Okay, Frenchy was hilarious, but still...) Annie tells Hughie to screw off, and leaves him. He, being a retard, can't figure out why. He wanders back home, where Butcher has again thoughtfully left a pool of blood-flecked semen in the doorway. He has a text from Vas, but there's nothing in it. And thus we finish up the book. It was basically a giant f'ing recap of the series so far. Like we needed one, this close to the end.
