I just read this on Dark Horizons and personally I'd like to see Laura Prepon as Red Sonja if she'd go back to her natural hair color.
"Red Sonja" Swings Again
Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films are bringing sword-and-sorcery comicbook heroine "Red Sonja" back to the bigscreen reports Variety.
The $25+ million budget flick's announcement comes a year after Dynamite Entertainment launched a new Red Sonja series that has gone on to be one of the bestselling indie comicbooks on the market.
Red Sonja, created by sword-and-sorcery legend Robert E. Howard, was introduced into Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" comics in 1973 and soon was given her own title.
A 1985 "Red Sonja" pic with Brigitte Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released by MGM to dismal box office numbers and poor reviews.

OH MY GOD, cooool.
Now, is that budget good or not? I have no clue!
We need a survey with a listing of the hottest current Red Head actresses with the right physique and lets see what happens.
Too bad I am not a movie buff, any volunteers?
Thanks for the post, the wait begins! :D
As a big Red Sonja fan, I think this news is very exciting and just hope they don't royally screw it up like they did with the previous movie version! As for an actress to play Sonja, my vote would be for Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3, Bloodrayne), she'd be perfect acting-wise and looks wise for the character in my opinion. Anyone else have any thoughts?
I've been reading the Dynamite Sonja comics from the premiere issue and have to say they're excellent!

Here's a picture of Kristanna Loken to further illustrate my choice for her as Sonja.....

For those investors that are interested in RED SONJA movie financial benefit, FMLY is the stock symbol of the company that adquired the movie and other rights. See the FMLY news release dated 05/02/06.

Just curious, how do you know this? Did a quick check on it and it is an OTC penny stock...

My vote: Jessica Biel
I liked her in Blade 3 and she could make an easy transition to red-head.

I would have to say no on Loken
Shes busy playing Painkiller Jane, and honestly she isnt that much of an actress based on what she has done so far. Sonja can only work with a strong actress at the helm.
Id almost go to say that she would work better animated, but lets hope this is at least better than the last one.

I think what would be cool is if the could do it stylized, sort of like 300. But that adds to the cost..
It is sort of hard to do a movie like this for 25 million these days. 40 million would make things a lot easier...
Lokken is just not a big enough draw for Red Sonja to work. Jessica Biel or Jessica Alba or about the only A-Listers that have the look, recognition, and acting to pull it off. Jessica Biel more of an actress, but Alba has more recognition.
25 million has me a little worried though. I mean it can be done if you really play it tight.
For instance, some action movie costs:
Aeon Flux 60 miillion (lost money)
Sin City 40 million
300 65 million
Tomb Raider 115 million (probably 20 million to Jolie though)
Bloodrayne 25 million (a complete flop)
Resident Evil (the original) 35 million
Kill Bill 30 million each
Underworld 25 million
The Illusionist (with Jessica Biel) 15 million
So it can be done, but the ones that cost less and succeed are labor of love projects, where someone had a vison and was able to run with it without much interference. Meaning it ran low enough on the radar that some studio head didn't stick his hands too far in it, which might be true of Red Sonja.
Lower budget movies never work by committee. I think beside the actress, I would be curious to know who the director would be. Has to be someone that has a stylized cool look, not someone stepping out of the USA cable network movies.

I would love to see frank miller as a director of the movie not some other person Frank Miller knows what comic books means to the fans and keeps to the Char's base, any other Director wouldn't know how to handle Red Dawn in my eyes unless there is one I have missed?hehe,so far all the comic books turned into movies haven't been good in my eyes.

Frank Miller has no experience directing films. He would fail miserably. A movie is a different media entirely.

If you ask me, Alba or Biel's salary would probably take a nice chunk of money from everything else, so my suggestion? Take someone who is not a big name, but is a decent actor and looks the part.

Perhaps an unknown would be best for the role.
Someone with the right "look" of course.
But I do have the sneaking suspicious the producers would have her clad in the chain mail bikini. :(

I don't think an unknown would have much chance of being successful in the box office. Jessica Biel really doesn't cost that much...maybe 4-5 million. For the name recognition, she would be worth it.
And I am hoping they do put her in the chain mail bikini for at least part of the movie. It is her signature look, really.

Thumbs down for Alba... she just does not have the Red Sonja look... her features are very different from how Sonja is depicted. IMO, she wasn't even fit for the Invisible Girl in FF.

Really? Alba started off in TV.
Eva Longoria seems to be doing alright.
No dude, it just depends on the movie.
Lilly is believabley hot and kick ass at the same time. She's even got freckles! :)
I guarantee you that Lilly will become a movie start after Lost! ;)
Lets kick her off with Red Sonja!

Jessica Biel: Scarlett And Natalie Get All My Parts
She's losing out on key roles...

Jessica Biel is getting frustrated with her movie career, because all the parts she wants go to either Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman instead.
The 25-year-old has been regularly appearing in films for the past couple of years, but says she’s finding it difficult to step onto the next “tier” of movies which could trouble Oscars judges.
She moans in The Sun, “Parts that I really want aren't going to me. Like 'The Other Boleyn Girl' with Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman.
"I don't want to say that there's nothing I love that I can have. But there's still the occasional script that the director doesn't want to see you for. They want that top tier of girl.”

I'd be ok with Jessica Biel. Lilly would be a finer choice as Jessica Biel is very hot and can act but she doesn't have the look of someone that could gentically have Red Hair.
She's a different kinda hot than the hotness we need for Sonja.
But hey, I don't think anyone would grumble with either Lilly or Beil!
Now the bigger question is will the outfit be the same as the books? :D

I just hope that it is a good director that can get the actress to cut loose with the role and embrace it. Sort of what Angelina Jolie did with Tomb Raider.

Lucy Lawless?
Everyone suggests her name every time a Wonder Woman movie casting discussing comes up, but I can see her playing Red Sonja or Elektra far more than WW. Plus Diana Prince is just boring :D
The only matter is, how would she look with red hair?

LL won't get cast as WW or Red Sonja. Too old for the parts...and again, casting a tv actress is pretty risky at the box office. Someone said Alba started as a TV actress, but she had a long career that she managed to parlay a segue to movies. Pretty rare. But she is pretty hot. That never hurts.

And Lucy Lawless is a bit butch! :)
I think we need a more leaner woman then a bulky mass. That automatically gets rid of Lucy Lawless, Jessica Biel and the likes for me. I can see Alba working in the part because 1) she's lean 2) her hair is naturally curly

She's bulked up quite a bit, not in a bad sense but she is more muscular then my image of Sonja.

uhhh...I don't think Jessica Biel is by any means too bulky...i mean she has muscle definition, but wouldn't put her by any means in bulky...
these are fairly recent...

but to be honest, i never thought Jessica Biel was like uber hot. it would be nice if they could get someone that was uber hot that would carry off that red sonja charm
That 2nd pic, that is what's getting me. The shoulders and arms are very muscular. I mean she's good looking for sure but I don't think fits into Sonja image. I don't know I might be pushing the obsession mark here so I won't comment much since my girlfriend also reads what I post and nudges me.

How the hell is Lucy Lawless a bulky mass? Hell, she doesn't even have muscles to speak of. I will never understand this sort of imaginary image of Lucy Lawless people seem to have in their heads that she is some extremely buff looking, or whatever.

1. Too short, body too stubby/stumpy.
2. Face too pre-adolescent and saggy/pudgy faced to be a convincing warrior, or as exotic as Red Sonja is supposed to be. Her nose is very prepubescent looking as well.
3. She hasn't done anything since Xena ended, which was 6 years ago.

Sorry. Your on your own with the Evangeline Lilly petition. I would go for Rhona Mitra before Evangeline. Little known fact: Rhona was 2nd in line to get the part of Kate on Lost after Evangeline.
