We have our actress, and I am stoked! I championed this particular actress and now we have her! So is perfect, has the right edge to her persona, and she is going to look smokin hot in the costume.

I admit this is a tease, because I can't tell you who she is until the official announcement.

but suffice to say - we appear to have the perfect attachment

peace!

Is this for the movie or something else? So there is a script?

I am going to guess.... Megan Fox.

She is the right age, the right recognition level (affordable, but was in a summer blockbuster), and smokin hot.

I just really hope two things:

1. She works out for the role and looks really fit in her bikini.
2. She's not Jesica Alba (enough with her already, please!!!)

Oh, and the movie has to be good too, which I'm sure it will be.

So when is the official announcement? I thought this project was going to be in legal hell forever. This is great news, can't wait to find out who it is!!

I have two criteria for this movie...

1. The actress playing Sonja can act!
2. Goddess, please, please, please, write a good script!

...the movie will rock if this happens. ;)

I just hopes it's not Angelina Jolie nothing against her it's just we have seen too much of her as well as most of theses big named girls around, the story line has to be good not like that lame story line from the 1980's,if they tell her story tell it right don't add extra junk like in the x-men movies, they messed thoses movies up big time, kitty pride was to be first not rogue. the Director has to be Frank miller I loved the 300 movie and would love to see it in the same coloring style. I would love to see George Lucas join on this as well but who knows.

Uh, where to start? Frank Miller is not a director and never has been. George Lucas wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole, Angelina Jolie is too big of a fish to catch regardless, and the X-men movies basically needed to condense hundreds upon hundreds of issues down to a few hours, and did do a pretty good job.

I just wished they would admit it's Megan Fox already. My connections have already said her manager was at least contacted.

We have hit a little hiccup - trying to handle it now.

Intercept - can't talk about who it is - that is why they call em' official announcements - will confirm or deny nothing no matter who you name.

And Beachbead, the director of 300 was Zach Snyder who is in London now directing Watchmen for my friend Lloyd Levin - would love to work with him but he is tied up for months finishing that project so its not even worth asking.

Lucas doesn't really do anything that he doesn't own. Star Wars and Indiana Jones and thats about it - he is not really a filmmaker any more - he is a mogul who runs a multi-billion dollar corporation - this does not leave much time for things like creative writing.

No worries bro - I love Frank Miller. I actually got to meet him at ComicCon last summer which was sweet.

the issue has been raised with him - but he is very hot right now and I think he really wants to work on stuff he himself owns and has a high level of control over.

Please don't let Frank Miller be involved with this...he's going to make Sonja act like a whore, and Sonja is most definitely not a whore, thank you.

But really, I hope the movie doesn't turn Sonja into some horny wench, I'm pretty sick of those kind of movies. I think an origin movie would be okay, then have it be an on-going series...oh well, I can dream I guess.

I'm still hoping for Evageline Lilly!
But I do not want Megan Fox man!!
Megan Fox looks like a cheap Jennifer Connoly and would not make for a good Red Sonja.
We need a believable heroine. Well as believable as you can get with a character liek Red Sonja! ;)

:( i would have killed to have tried out for this one.
i hope it does better then the old movie did. it was just plain bad. but i think by now everyone knows that any writer worth his salt would not make those same mistakes. Not to mention the costume, i hope it is more true to the comic book character, granted it is impractical to an actual swordfight, but that's part of what makes it so great. it gives her a larger then life look.

I've just watched the (old) Red Sonja movie again.

Oh, man. So bad. Lucky it didn't kill the franchise FOREVER. I'd rather wait for the right director...the right script...the right actress...even if it delays production. What I'd really like is a movie that's as good as the comic book!

Michael Caine?! (Sorry, sorry, sorry!!!)

This is actually an interesting question; what kind of a voice should Sonja have (strong, seductive, sarcastic,...)?!
Should she have an accent (Hyrkanian in I-dont-know Nemedia, Aquilonia, or wherever...)?!

Have we been told what real-land Hyrkania is supposed to represent?

I think strong definitely. Not much seductive because then she just becomes another sex-fantasy made by Hollywood instead of the fierce warrior we know her as.

I read that too on the IMDB. I think he could do a decent enough job. I loved Sin City and his El Mariachi movies! The IMDB also lists some unknown (to me anyway) writer for the screenplay. I wonder if this means they're finally going to tell us who is playing the She-Devil??

MarsNeedsBowlers
06-27-2008, 07:36 PM
McGowan can act when she has a strong director (so that's good) and she's totally miscast -- which is bad.

My guess, with this actress in the lead role, the budget will be...only slightly higher than direct-to-DVD.

MarsNeedsBowlers
06-27-2008, 07:37 PM
And Emily Blunt? A far, far better choice (but still not a box office name).

intercept789
06-27-2008, 11:17 PM
Yeah, Emily Blunt could work also because of her ability to deliver a little humor, if desired. I posted this in another thread, but valid here...

Rodrieguez as the producer will probably work, but McGowen isn't going to sell to audiences.

There are three that would work far better, and aren't that expensive for payroll, and are decent enough actresses with the right director. In no particular order...

Teresa Palmer

Rachel Nichols
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/v16/mutantenemy/rachel-nichols-06.jpg

It needs to be someone smoking hot. It needs to be someone that can act well with a good director. It needs a good director. I am willing to bet, since casting this early in the game changes often, she won't play Red Sonja. And if so, a probable strike two on Red Sonja on the screen.

This is better that what I could've ever hoped for.
I had mentioned previously that Evangeline Lilly would make a great Red Sonja but I gotta say that Miss McGowen will do nicely and with Rodriguez at the helm, we are gonna get a great one!!

I diagree that McGowen won't draw audiences. Folks loved Planet Terror and they loved her in it. Marketing will be diffucult, but if done with a little cheese and pulpyness, I think it will do well.

Grindhouse. Cost $70 million. Take (international+domestic) $25 million.

FAIL.

+ couple movies, where either the actors are involved or an actress and director are notorious EPIC fails.

Wow! What about after DVD sales?
And bearing in mind that the Grindsouse movies were messed about with from day one. Not to mention the flack Rodriguez got from the director guild over Frank Miller on Sin City. Nobody in Hollywood wanted Grindhouse to do well. It's kind of unfair to use Planet Terror as a financial example.

Red Sonja is a cult character and a rather silly one too (as much as I love her) I think it would be crazy to invest in a massively budgeted movie. A good cult movie will do fine I think.

MarsNeedsBowlers

I liked GRINDHOUSE (and "Planet Terror"). And I liked Rose McGowan in it. I thought she did a fine job as a very modern, make-up heavy lead actress.

She just isn't my idea of Red Sonja. I can't help but think that she didn't get the job because she was right for the part; she seemed to have gotten the job because of her personal relationship with Robert Rodriquez.

I'd like to see Jennifer Garner play her. I saw her as Elektra, and I think she's got the believability, looks and agility to pull off the part of Red Sonja. It doesn't matter if Elektra made big $$ or not, as Red Sonja, she'd be perfect in my opinion.

Megan Fox is very attractive, but can she fight? I want an actress who can act, fight and look good as Sonja.

In that order.

Red Bryan

Garner can perform her one role she did as Sidney and as Elektra, too. This role doesn't match with Red Sonja. Too much "wounded kitten" charme. Good for Sidney, not as good for Elektra ad impossible for Sonja.

I'm still not 100% convinced she isn't right for the role. She may surprise us. I mean, I thought Tobey Maguire was a bad choice for Spider-Man until I saw him in it. I changed my tune after that. I will give Rose the benefit of the doubt and hope she can pull it off.

I disagree. I think she can act any part given to her. Sonja should be well-rounded and not cardboard. My opinion, of course. But whoever plays her, need to play it seriously, and not like it's a joke, because I've seen way too many fantasy films done half-arsed for my taste. I want something with believability and quality of Lord of the Rings, or at the very least, the quality of a good modern superhero film like the Spiderman films.

Not to say anything negative about whoever plays her or is chosen. I just want to see a GOOD film that doesn't camp it up like the old film did, and the TV series style shows do. Give us someone who can handle a sword and not look like she's just posing with it, without any idea how to fight. That and acting skills, and especially, a decent enemy this time!

'nuff said. :)

Hopefully, if there's a sequel she'll get some clothes. :D

Red Bryan
07-26-2008, 11:40 AM
Do you expect Superman in a Tuxedo? Think not. A Red Sonja Movie must have the chain mail bikini, because otherwise it's not a Red Sonja movie but a movie with a red haired Sonja-wannabe.

Dr Nightmare
07-26-2008, 04:06 PM
The chainmail is iconic, folks, I can't picture her in any other armor, aside from the rags she wore in the early comics. Yeah, I don't want to see Superman in a tuxedo either. Maybe Sonja wears "regular" clothes at the beginning and for whatever reason, a shipwreck, house burns down, kidnapped, she's left with no possessions and finds only some chainmail to clothe her, so she makes the bikini out of it. Lol? :o

ms_ventress
07-27-2008, 02:45 AM
but her costume isn't really, fully chainmail... its actually disc-mail or scale-mail... not so see-through as chainmail. I hope they change it to one of those types of mail. and she has no gloves.. boots... sheath... but again this is a sneak-peak poster so its not going to show everything.. but I am in love with the hair... I am really glad is bright read and not real red hair.

Dr Nightmare

I like the maille attached to the brown bikini, I don't think the armor should be see-through either, we want to see a Sonja flick, not a porno :P

I hope they give her at least the shoulder armor and armbands to break the monotony of her suit.

Raymar3d
07-28-2008, 06:12 AM
Teasers are usually made before a full 'real' costume when it's this early on. And, if you recall from the stories in the old Marvel Comics, she got the fancy chain bikini from the king who tried to add her to his harem. She kept it as a symbol. Prior to that, she wore a much more realistic short hauberk of chain that was more like a belted shirt, complete with sleeves.

The picture in that poster looks a little like she's recovering from a defeat, perhaps her 'origin' story. She may be a little like Peter Parker in his 'Human Spider' costume in the first Spiderman movie. Something make-shift and thrown together.

and from the Red Sonja panel

A superbly crowded room waited anxiously for what was billed as a "one on one" panel featuring actress Rose McGowan, who would be taking on the sword-and-cleavage role of Robert E. Howard character Red Sonja. Before things began, a recording repeatedly gave people instructions about passes needed to exit and re-enter the room, noting that questions would be pre-screened and ticking off other points of proposed convention etiquette. At the stroke of 2PM, the room was filled to capacity and the panelists were nowhere to be seen. Director Robert Rodriguez walked on stage at 2:05 and spoke warmly to the crowd. "You all know why you're here!" he said, smiling. "Red Sonja." He noted a poster that was shown with McGowan pre-visualizing. A t-shirt is being given away of her licking a bloody sword. McGowan came out next in a shiny, tight, green strapless dress. "Hello, awesome people in Comic-Con in San Diego in 2008," she said sultrily. Director Douglas Aarniokoski came out next, and they said the writer was stuck in traffic. Rodriguez started talking about his 11-year-old adventures tricking his mother into buying the blood soaked Howard magazines, advertising the Dino De Laurentis movie and featuring the Red Sonja subscription ad with a decapitated head. Rodriguez lives in the area where Howard looked down and said, "This is Cimmeria, this is where Conan was born." "I felt a real kinship to this freak," Rodriguez said. "I have a collection of Sin City stuff, and I finally made that. I have a collection of Robert E. Howard stuff, so ... when Rose McGowan came along, we've been trying to find something to work together on, and we did 'Planet Terror' together. I like to work with the same actors and actresses and give them different roles." "Rose walks in with this comic book and scripts and says, 'I've been reading this script, I don't know if you've heard of it, I think I wanna do it!' She asks, 'do you think this is a property, should I do it?" Rodriguez then spit took his water and said he encouraged her. "It's a geek's dream getting to immerse her in this world you've been collecting since you were a kid. That's how I came to be involved in this, and how it came so quickly. This seemed like something we could jump on right away." "If anybody would like to bottle Robert Rodriguez' DNA, you can just swab the side of this panel," McGowan joked. "What I liked about it, it was very difficult to read these sorts of things where I could make these scenes kind of funny, I'm the girlfriend and I'm just supposed to set up his jokes. Being a feminist and just loving the underdog, and often in my life being one. I brought it home, and said, 'I'm really interested in female vengeance.' I thought 'therapist.' That's kind of where this took off. This movie is gonna be hard, it's gonna be cold, it's gonna be dirty, and I'm up for it." The crowd cheered. "Someday, I'm gonna be doing a Jane Austen movie, and I asked if [Rodriguez] would ever do anything like that, and he said, 'could there be a dead body in it? I thought this would be a good synergy, after his water spitting." They also battled with swords and lawn spikes on the lawn after deciding to do this project. She continued, "When I was little, I saw 'La Femme Nikita,' and that was who I wanted to be when I grew up. I think Nikita would be proud. I decided to, as he said, make your own destiny. What I get to do soon is take a big giant sword and kill a lot of people. I think that sums up my attraction." Rodriguez talked about why he's producing but not directing, but insisted he'd be very hands on, shooting footage and everything. Rodriguez said, "Kind of like 'co-directing,' but not officially, because he's DGA, and I'm not." "You say that with such disdain," Aarniokowski said. They announced a Conan project would be coming along soon, "to help integrate the worlds," Rodriguez said. "Robert calls me up and says, 'Red Sonja,' and I said 'absolutely, let's do it," the director said. "We're gonna shake it up. It's gonna be unlike anything you've ever seen. It's gonna be a ride. We're gonna kick some backside. I have to be aware, it says here, 'some members of your audience will be under eighteen." The crowd laughed at that. "The style will set it apart from any of the other sword and sandal types of movies you see," Rodriguez said before opening up the floor for questions ... which led to a line of more than 30 people in a matter of seconds. Rodriguez noted that there will be a tonal match to the Di Laurentis movies, but McGowan said, "I will not have a mullet!" "We're still discussing that," he joked. A new recipe will be on the "Grind House" DVD. Best Buy asked him to do a 10 minute cooking disc, but he preferred to keep it on his DVDs as an extra. What kind of physical prep is McGowan taking on? "I've been working out about three hours a day. Monday I start my sword training," with the sword trainer from the Matrix and "The Wachowski's ninja movie." She's also training in free running (as seen in "Casino Royale") ... but with swords. She's also determined to do her own stunts. "I train to do everything myself, in the 90th percentile of stunts I did on 'Planet Terror.'" Rodriguez said, "Frank's written a 'Sin City 2' script. We're trying to figure out how we're gonna do it between our projects. He showed me the script three months ago." "I love to collaborate, and when I tried, I got penalized," Rodriguez said of leaving the DGA. "It was just really bizarre, and I told them 'hey, don't change your rulebook for me, I'll just step out.' That's why I'm only producing in name this movie. We'll have our steady-cams strapped on, back to back." An 11-year-old came up and professed fandom for "Planet Terror," which concerned some, and asked McGowan what she looked forward to most in this film. "if you saw it in a theatre, that'd made you 9 or 10, which is awesome too. I remember the first movie I saw was 'CHUD,' but that is off topic. With every thrust of my sword, I shall be thinking of people like that," she said, speaking of her disdain for negativity on the internet. Casting hasn't begun on supporting actors, nor would Rodriguez discuss villains, but noted they would be from the Dynamite Comics. McGowan said they would avoid using villains that had been seen too often before. The sword is being designed and made now, "but not in China," McGowan said. She plans to keep the sword, "and get another one for my grandchild!" McGowan and Rodriguez met at Cannes, and she called him "Count F***-ula," and impressed him with her toughness and attitude. He wanted to break her from the "golden handcuffs" of being on "Charmed," and he wrote Cherry based on his experience with her as a person. "Especially my poledancing," she quipped. 3D filmmaking is not out of the question for the film, but through a post production effect and not actual camera work. "Costumes in general are one of my favorite collaborative process. I'm always surprised by actors and actresses who say 'throw something on me.' Red Sonja has an awesome metal bikini, and I couldn't improve on that. I'm a Virgo, and I'm really detail oriented, so even with Cherry's outfits, there's tiny skulls that you wouldn't see unless you are watching on a huge HD screen." Will Rodriguez return to zombies or "infected people?" "Only if he does Jane Austen," McGowan joked before Rodriguez said he was doing a "Planet Terror" sequel called "Cherry Darling." "Machete" was written in 1983, and he's been surprised by the popularity, and said "now I have to shoot the movies. With sequels, 'Machete Kills' and 'Machete Kills Again.' I really have so many projects, and things change on a daily basis. The only thing that's still there that I know I'm gonna do are the Machete movies. We get our own Mexploitation character!" When asked about ratings decisions on "Red Sonja," Rodriguez said, "My name is 'double-R!' That's what you're gonna get! Rose calls me 'Double-R'" "Arrr ..." she added. They plan a fourth quarter 2009 release, and when asked if there would be fantasy characters whose blood she'd lick off the sword, she said, "When I was growing up, I dreamed about a question like that," McGowan said. Aarniokoski promised there will be many species of blood slain by the character. More than twenty new people didn't get their questions answered as the panel ended and bloody-sword-licking shirts were passed out to whoever was fast enough to get one.

The current Star Magazine tabloid has an article on how they met.

Robert E. Howard character Red Sonja
If that's not a typo by Hannibal whats-his-name in that article, it's become painfully clear that no one working on this movie has any inkling of Robert E. Howard's work.

Sonja has absolutely no connection to Robert E. Howard. Red Sonya of Rogantino, as originally created by Howard, has no connection whatsoever to her other than by being a reinvent.

As I've stated elsewhere, the Hyborian Age incarnation of her was created in 1973 by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, NOT Robert E. Howard.

I've always thought that the creative credits should read " Created by Roy Thomas and Barry Smith based on a character created by Robert E. Howard " but I guess that's too long and confusing to some ;)

it is just not really complete general knowledge.

So please let them be :)

The mistake is just easily made and well...I have never ever read REH-books but love the comics. Period.

Stating that "it is painfully clear" makes it almost that you really think of it as a disgrace.

Even so...

suppose they DO know.

Would they really go all public with that fanboy-knowledge?

I think not! The discussions and conversations would stray way to far from the original message "Red Sonja Movie" instead of the then formed message "the red sonja/sonya debacle made into a savage era movie"

Apparently so.

You're missing out. :)

Well...I kinda do.
Look, I love Red Sonja. But her backstory is somewhat...lackluster. Something that the works of Robert E. Howard clearly are NOT.
If the Hyborian Age Hykanian Red Sonja was an REH character, she'd most likely have a much better (and more believable) backstory than being a rape victim blessed by a goddess.
